Proofreading & Editing Examples

Wow, that seems impressive!  Can you give me an example of each one of the above points?

Sure.  Read below.  How many mistakes will you find?  The corrections are in red.

Spelling

You might write:  My nieghbor planted flours bye the back fense.

We would change it to:  My neighbor planted flowers by the backfence.

Grammar

You might write:  It don’t matter to him cuz he brung earphones so he could sing to hisself.

We would change it to:  It doesn’t matter to him because he broughtearphones so he could sing to himself.

Punctuation

You might write: I said Im tired.  However; Id’ still like to find the two muscians’s houses or at least find one actors’ favorite hangout.”

We would change it to: I said, “I’m tired.  However, I’d still like to find the two musicians’ houses or at least find one actor’s favorite hangout.”

Typos

You might write:  How are you you today? I hop you are doin better then yetserday.

We would change it to: How are you today? I hope you are doing better than yesterday.

Organization

We will check to make sure your thoughts flow logically from one to another as the paper progresses.  We may re-arrange sentences to improve the organization.  We will also add transitions or segues if necessary.

You might write:  I’m twenty-two years old. The sky is blue, like when I was a kid.  I still love that – and summer too.

We would change it to:  Even though I’m twenty-two years old, I still love the blue skies of summer that remind me of my childhood.

Clarity

You might write:  The local elementary school was a former factory but the school took advantage of this look and its multi-cultural neighborhood by creating a museum inside its walls.

We would change it to:  The renovators of the local elementary school incorporated the building’s industrial heritage and its multi-cultural neighborhood by creating a museum within the new structure.

Consistency

Some words have more than one acceptable spelling or form, but should be internally consistent in a particular document.

You might write:  The television show was cancelled after two seasons.  The actor then canceled his order for the plasma T.V. since he would no longer be able to afford to watch himself on TV.

We would change it to:  The TV show was cancelled after two seasons.  The actor then cancelled his order for the plasma TV since he would no longer be able to afford to watch himself on TV.

Word Usage

All communication should be appropriate to its audience.   Professors expect you to express yourself differently in a paper than you would if you were making the same point to a friend in the gym.

You might write: I got a lot of cards after my operation.  So many that the nurses were like, “Boy oh boy, he must be one  rockin' dude with the chicks.”

We would change it to:  I received many cards after my operation.  In fact, the nurses remarked about my apparent popularity with the young ladies.
