Sex On Soap Operas – Conclusion
Overall, men and women's answers to their perceptions of sex on soap operas were not all that different. However, identical answers were rare; one gender was usually more likely to answer a certain way than the other. One logical and likely explanation for the similarity of answers is that the medium itself probably has more of an impact than the gender of the viewer in reference to the perception of sex on soaps. This mass medium (perhaps more than any other because of the longevity and repetition of its content) may have a homogenizing effect on the audience's perception. Another contributing factor could be that a particular medium tends to attract and retain a somewhat homogenous base of viewers.
No doubt, both men and women will long be interested in seeing stories of love and romance as well as of adventure and excitement. Some will maintain that soap operas would be boring without sex (seventy percent of both men and women agreed or strongly agreed with that exact statement) while others will insist there is too much sex on daytime television. Some will be watching to escape from reality while others will be looking for dramatic presentations of the most controversial issues facing society today. One thing is for sure; sex is as much a part of soap operas as the medium through which we take it all in is a part of our lives. Both show every indication that so many of us will continue to tune in tomorrow.
